Are We Winning The War On Prison Contraband?

Contraband continues to be a big problem in South Australian prisons.

New stats released today show a spike in weapons, electronics and illegal tattoo equipment busts behind bars.

Contraband searches have doubled over the past six years, leading to 1171 illegal items seized in 2015/16.

But the State Government's confident its beginning to win the war, saying that's down 20% on the previous year.

Drugs found within the system also dropped by 57% in the past year.

However the number of positive drug tests were up 9.5%.

The contraband crackdown's been helped by new $2.7 million biometric security gates at Yatala and ionscan testing of visitors across 4 SA prisons.
