Brisbane City Council has announced a shock ban on plastic including straws, helium balloons and disposable water bottles, from all of its operations.
The products will be phased out at City Hall, libraries and community forums, while up to 50,000 council-sponsored events across Brisbane, including Riverfire, will be encouraged to go green.
"This week we led a vote of full Council to make Brisbane even more clean, green and sustainable," the Council said in a Facebook post on Thursday.
"This is just Council's latest step to be more sustainable after becoming 100% carbon neutral last year!"
The announcement comes just days after the council's field services chairman said there were no plans to phase out plastic, and that helium balloon regulation was a matter for the state government
A time frame for the ban is yet to be announced.
