A beach expert has made the shock call for Australia's beaches to ditch the iconic red and yellow flags because they're being ignored by swimmers.
Dr Rob Brander from the University of NSW, also known as Dr Rip, has told News Corp he believes the usual warning to always swim between the flags has become white noise for many beachgoers.
He also pointed to the fact that just four per cent of the nation's beaches have flags.
It comes after Surf Life Saving Queensland released stats showing 22 of the 77 drowning deaths in the state over the past decade have occurred within 200m of a patrolled beach.
However none of those deaths happened between the flags.
