Gold Coasters Could Soon Turn Left On Red

Council calls for new trial

Gold Coasters Could Soon Turn Left On Red

Drivers turning left at some of the Gold Coast's busiest intersections won't have to wait for the light to turn green, if Gold Coast City Council gets its way.

A congestion busting initiative could soon see drivers turn left on a red light at signed intersections, if the coast is clear.

The City of Gold Coast supported plans for another trial of the manouvre, at Thursday's City Infrastructure Committee meeting.

It comes after a successful trial at three intersections in Benowa, Southport and Robina back in 2013.

"The CCTV footage there at the time showed there were no accidents, so we're wanting to trial it further," Councillor Pauline Young said.

Council is now calling on the State Government to give them the green light to implement the new trial at up to 50 sets of lights across the city.

"As the coast becomes busier and busier, we need to explore every possible avenue," said Cr Young.

A similar trial is currently in place at 49 intersections in Brisbane.
