Hoax Letter Asks Resident To Host Family Of 11 From Overseas During Commonwealth Games

Scam or racist joke?

Hoax Letter Asks Resident To Host Family Of 11 From Overseas During Commonwealth Games

A letter telling the recipient they have been chosen to host a Sri Lankan family during the Commonwealth Games, has been labelled a hoax, and passed on to police.

Reddit user PaulTendrils posted a picture of the letter to the online forum on Tuesday, saying it was received by a family member of his near Newcastle, NSW.

The note features the Commonwealth Games logo and says it is from GOLDOC chairman Peter Beattie.

"You will be pleased, I am sure, to know we have assigned a typical family group from Sri-Lanka to be guests in your home for a few months before and after the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games," it reads.

"The family will consist of father, mother, children (5), wife's brother, grandfather, grandmother and her sister."

It says the host family will be provided with adequate supplies of curry powder, rice, chicken and two milking goats as well as free immunisation against typhus, cholera, tuberculosis and leprosy.

Some people commenting on the thread slammed the letter as racist, while other questioned the purpose of the scam.

"Is this a scam, or is this some bad attempt to whip up racial tensions?" Wrote LordWalderFrey1.

A statement from games organiser GOLDOC says police are now working to find the source of the letter, and work out the reason for the hoax.
