Hundreds of people could be out of a job after construction workers were told to down tools at the Jewel project in Surfers Paradise.
Chinese developer Yuhu Group is reportedly ceasing funding, with an email sent to contractors instructing them to shut the site down on Wednesday.
A union meeting determined more than 400 workers would return to work today, but the future is still unclear.
However Mayor Tom Tate stated there wasn't major concern for the jobs going forward.
"If multiplex drops due to tender it doesn't mean the jobs are lost because somebody else has still got to complete the new design work," said Cr Tate.
"It'll still be local tradies be going there."
