Light rail might have to take the long way around

Burleigh MP says no to tram tunnel

Light rail might have to take the long way around

The Member for Burleigh doesn't want a dirty, great hole blown in the side of Burleigh Hill.

Michael Hart replied to a Newscorp article published on Wednesday, that said council's light rail manager Ken Deutscher, told a light rail conference held on the Gold Coast on Tuesday that it would make sense for the Broadbeach to Burleigh section of track to follow the coastline, rather than diverting inland around Burleigh Hill.

Mr Deutscher said that could mean a tunnel would have to be built, but Mr Hart said he won't be backing the move.

"It's the worst idea I've ever heard and I won't support it."

The route for Stage Three of the project is still being mapped out, but the Burleigh MP said he believes it should go the long way around.

"GoldLinQ are pushing the coastal route for the light rail; that's because it's better for them," he said.

"I'm more interested in what's better for the people of the Gold Coast and that's why I support sending the tram out to the west, down through Elanora, down through the heavy rain corridor".
