New Tech To Get Everyone Swimming Between The Red And Yellow Flags

Life-fi trialled on the Gold Coast

New Tech To Get Everyone Swimming Between The Red And Yellow Flags

An added incentive for swimmers to stay between the flags at the beach, with free wi-fi being set up in patrolled areas.

The aim of the new Life-Fi technology was to get more beach-goers swimming between the red-and-yellow markers where life guards could keep an eye on them.

It would also be able to send those connected to the network up-to-date information about beach and surf conditions in a number of languages.

CEO of Surf Life Saving Queensland John Brennan hoped the technology would help save lives, especially among internationals tourists.

"Over the last ten years some 41% of drownings have occurred with international tourists," he said.

"We're going to be able to communicate with them in their own languages about surf conditions, if the beach is closed, tides, if there are any sightings of marine creatures or animals or anything."

"Boundaries will be set by the modem so those people in that area will receive that real-time technology when they turn on their phone or iPad," he said.
