UPDATE: Thousands of homes have lost power across the Gold Coast following a gusty storm that barrelled across South-East Queensland.

Burleigh Waters was the worst hit suburb on Thursday with 1372 homes affected, followed by Gilston with 888 and Nerang with 679 outages.

Energex and SES crews have been working to resolve the issues, with several reports of damage coming through.

EARLIER: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for South-East Queensland and is expected to pack damaging winds.

The Bureau of Meteorology expected the storm cell to hit Springbrook by around 10:55am, before passing over Coolangatta at about 11:25am.

It was also set to affect the Logan, Ipswich and Brisbane areas.

Residents are asked to move their cars under cover and away from trees, secure loose outdoor items and beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
