Police discovered an unexpected "spike" in crime after an echidna was located during a search warrant at a home yesterday.
Orana Mid-Western police executed a search warrant at a property in Edward Street, Coonamble around 2:40pm yesterday afternoon, where the spiky critter was located in a fish tank and seized by officers.
Police also seized cash, cannabis leaves, a slingshot, and a drill set allegedly stolen from a primary school on Bertram Street, Coonamble.
A 25-year-old woman was arrested and taken to Coonamble Police Station.
She was charged with two counts of possess prohibited drug, possess prohibited plant, possess prescribed restricted substance, cultivate prohibited plant, supply prohibited drug, possession of a prohibited weapon, goods in custody suspected of being stolen, and harm or attempt to harm a protected animal.
The woman was granted conditional bail and is due to appear before Coonamble Local Court on Tuesday 20 February 2018.
The echidna was taken into the care of a Coonamble Shire Council ranger.
