Slain senior constable Brett Forte will be remembered at a funeral service at Toowoomba this morning, as a larrikin hero.

41 year old Forte.. a police officer of more than 15 years, a husband and father of 3.. died in the line of duty last Monday. He was shot dead by violent career criminal Rick Maddison, who was later killed in a shoot out with police following a 21 hour siege.

Queensland Police are preparing for more than 5,000 people to turn out to the Clive Berghofer Recreational Centre at 11am - it will be the biggest funeral Toowoomba has ever hosted.

Assistant Commissioner Tony Wright said he expected a large crowd made up of Senior Constable Forte’s family, friends and colleagues.

"It is all about honouring Senior Constable Forte’s sacrifice and our officers have been working around the clock to ensure everything is in place to give him the dignified farewell that he deserves."

“The venue can seat around 2,000 people and a big screen will be erected out the front with temporary seating available for attendees if the venue becomes full.”

There will be a guard of honour stretching approximately a kilometre. The motorcade will be escorted by police motorcycles, the QPS pipes and drums, the mounted unit and dog squad.

There will be some road closures, and police have issued information about car parking

The service will also be broadcast on TV, for members of the public who wish to pay their respects from afar.
