The husband of a New Zealand woman who died just hours after their wedding ceremony says he's been left in incredible shock.
26 year old Jamieka McCarthy Harford married her partner on Saturday. During the ceremony, the young bride became unwell.. and only hours later, her family were left planning a funeral.
"Her passing was a huge shock to everybody, to lose her so quickly and this has been incredibly difficult to process. She was taken from us without notice by a horrible, deadly disease," her new husband, Andrew, told NewsHub.
In a statement, her family says she was so happy to be married, describing the wedding as a 'beautiful, happy occasion surrounded by love'.
The Auckland Regional Public Health Service is now "investigating a death that fits the case definition of meningococcal disease, [and] working directly with close contacts of the deceased to prevent further transmission of the disease."
Meningococcal disease is a quickly spread bacterial infection which is transmitted by very close contact with an infected person.
