A 36 year old man has been charged over a terrifying attack on a pair of Finnish nationals on a section of the Bibbulmun Track in Kalamunda.
It's alleged the man drove a Mitsubishi Triton at the male walker, 33, on Saturday afternoon, before exiting the car and striking him with a shovel, causing a significant head wound.
Police believe the driver then turned to the walker's companion, 33, but the injured man managed to stand up and protect her.
During the struggle, the woman grabbed the shovel and allegedly struck the attacker.
At that time, a passer by came to their aid and helped restrain the man until police arrived.
The bushwalkers and their alleged attacker were all taken to hospital.
