The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) described the situation as "severe and historic", with Townsville Airport recording 861 millimetres of rain for the seven days to 9:00am on Saturday. Flooding from Ross River is meant to peak very shortly, and with over 20 000 homes affected by the floods the community of Townsville is being told to brace themselves for the continued impact.
"This situation is unprecedented. We're talking about rain in terms of metres now, not millimetres."
