5 tips to have a good nights sleep every night

The benefits of a good nights sleep go way beyond removing the bags from underneath your eyes.

If you struggle to get some shut eye, it can dramatically change your mental state, weight and health.

Here are 5 useful tips to help you have a good nights sleep every night of the week.

1. Sleep Schedule

Stick to a sleep schedule at the same time you go to sleep and wake up - even on the weekends. But don't kid yourself, choose a bed time when you normally feel tired, so that you don’t toss and turn.

An easy way to test this is, if you're getting enough sleep, you should wake up without an alarm. If you need an alarm clock, you may need an earlier bedtime.

If you need to make up for a few late nights, do it via a 15-20 nap in the early afternoon.

2. Exercise is Key

Experts have said it before, and they'll say it again: Exercise is key. Especially if you suffer from irregular sleep patterns.

The more vigorous the exercise the better the sleep benefits. It can take several month for the effects of this to kick into your sleeping habits, so be patient and get moving!

3. Clear your Head

If stressful and anxious thoughts are running through your mind at night, it will make it very difficult to sleep. This headache will have to be dealt with during the day. Learn to manage your time more effectively, maintain calm and keep a positive outlook. Set aside specific times to focus on one task at a time so you're not going to bed feeling like you've missed one hundred things.

4. Design Time

It's time to re-evaluate your sleeping space. Sometimes even small changes to your environment can make a big difference to your quality of sleep. Make sure your bedroom is free from light, noise, even your partner's snoring habit, so your bedtime is free from any distractions.

5. Get Comfy

The average life expectancy of a mattress is 9 or 10 years. If you've had yours since high school it's probably time to hit the shops! Comfortable and attractive pillows make all the difference too. It invites you into bed to rest rather than it looking like an unbearable task.
