When the Queen of Soul passed away just over two months ago she left the kind of legacy that only a glass ceiling-smashing icon can. The first woman ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Aretha Franklin won 18 Grammy awards, earned a Lifetime Achievement Award and is widely considered to be the best singer the world has ever seen.
Emily hitting the high notes with Aretha’s Respect during Australian Idol series three’s ‘60s special:
It was Aretha’s hits that initially put ex-Inala forklift operator Emily Williams on the map back in 2005 as she belted them out on stage in front of a gobsmacked nation as part of the Australian Idol series that saw her crowned runner-up. Emily’s success continued as she joined the Young Divas (This Time I Know It’s For Real), performing alongside Paulini, Jessica Mauboy and the GC’s very own Ricki-Lee Coulter, but it was as a solo artist where she was given the freedom to really show off her vocal chops and wow a crowd.
Emily singing Aretha’s classic Say A Little Prayer, a video that’s racked up over two million views on YouTube:
A multi-platinum selling recording artist who has most recently made her musical theatre debut as understudy for the lead in the Australian production of The Bodyguard, Emily is now taking to the road to celebrate the life of her idol, Aretha Franklin. Showcasing iconic hits like Respect, Think, Natural Woman and Chain of Fools, this unforgettable performance promises to be filled with uplifting songs that defined an era, as well as being the perfect opportunity to learn more about the widely-revered singer and her own influences.
“To me music isn’t just words accompanied by a beat, it’s everything, it’s the soundtrack to my world.”
